Any given IT project can represent a huge investment for a company. It may mark the beginning of a new branch of the business or even an entirely new direction for the business as a whole.

With so much potentially hinging on its outcome, projects must be given the greatest chance of success. Selecting the right project manager or project management company to oversee the project is critical to that success.

Daysha Consulting are a Dublin based project management company offering a range of IT related services focusing around Consulting, Delivery and Education. Here we look at five key skills you should consider when looking for an IT project management company.

The ability to communicate with clarity and precision is vital to project management. One of the first tasks facing a project manager is to develop sustainable agreement between the various stakeholders of the project.

If a project manager can establish this groundwork, the project’s chances for success are vastly improved. Communication is not just about explaining and developing consensus it also includes the ability to listen and to understand.

In this regard communication is vital in establishing the scope of the project, if schedules and budgets are in place and what resources are available.

With schedules, budgets and resources established, organisation naturally becomes a key factor. But in project management organization is not simply about imposing structures.

While it is important to keep budgets and schedules under control, organization also needs to lend itself to the direction of the project and facilitate it successfully reaching its end goal.

This means laying out the ground work for the project in advance to facilitate changes in direction, shifts in focus and reassessment without being restricted by an imposed structure.

This leads to adaptability. Some changes that occur in the course of a project are normal, expected and even predictable and can be straightforward to deal with. However, IT projects rarely follow a regular pattern and unforeseen occurrences are always possible.

The mark of a skilled IT Project Manager is not only in how they handle unexpected change but in how they prepare for the unexpected. Where provisions are made for the unexpected, managing them is that much more likely to be successful.

Experience is an area that can count a lot for managing the unexpected. But it is also important when it comes to the specific requirements of a project. It is important to be sure that the project manager has relevant experience.

The size of a project is one of the more important areas to keep in mind. The difference between managing a ten person project and a twenty person project can be substantial. It is also important that a Project Manager have experience in a range of fields.

It is often the case that project managers from quite diverse disciplines can cross over successfully while very technically proficient personnel have difficulty managing other projects even within a similar field.

There are many different approaches to project management. Some are more suited to different types of project than others but most project managers should be familiar with a range of approaches.

The type of approach a given project manager will take can be broadly broken down into two main categories: flexible and rigid.

Daysha implement a flexible approach to project management and project planning. Working from an Agile background, Daysha have developed their own approach to project planning and implementation called Pathfinder.

Pathfinder aims to design projects from the very outset to be more, robust, adaptable and ultimately successful.
